Bigotry hiding behind patriotism...

I received the following email in my hotmail inbox earlier this week...

This is not meant to offend but is food for thought

After hearing that the state of SA changed its opinion and let a Muslim woman have her picture on her driver's license with her face covered this is an editorial written by an Australian citizen, published in a newspaper. He did quite a job, didn't he?

Read on, please!

I am tired of this nation worrying about whether we are offending some individual or their culture. Since the terrorist attacks on Bali, we have experienced a surge in patriotism by the majority of Australians. However, the dust from the attacks had barely settled when the "politically correct" crowd began complaining about the possibility that our patriotism was offending others.

I am not against immigration, nor do I hold a grudge against anyone who is seeking a better life by coming to Australia. However, there are a few things that those who have recently come to our country, and apparently some born here, need to understand. This idea of Australia being a multicultural community has served only to dilute our sovereignty and our national identity.

As Australians, we have our own culture, our own society, our own language and our own lifestyle. This culture has been developed over centuries of struggles, trials and victories by millions of men and women who have sought freedom. We speak ENGLISH, not Spanish, Lebanese, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, or any other language. Therefore, if you wish to become part of our society, learn the language!

"In God We Trust" is our National Motto. This is not some Christian, right wing, political slogan. We adopted this motto because Christian men and women, on Christian principles, founded this nation, and this is clearly documented. It is certainly appropriate to display it on the walls of our schools. If God offends you, then I suggest you consider another part of the world as your new home, because God is part of our culture.

If the Southern Cross offends you, or you don't like 'A Fair Go,' then you should seriously consider a move to another part of this planet.

We are happy with our culture and have no desire to change, and we really don't care how you did things where you came from.

This is OUR COUNTRY, Our Land, and Our Lifestyle, and we will allow you every opportunity to enjoy all this. But once you are done complaining, whining, and griping about our Flag, Our Pledge, Our National Motto, or Our Way of Life, I highly encourage you take advantage of one other great Australian freedom, "THE RIGHT TO LEAVE".

I figure if we all keep passing this to our friends (and enemies) it will also, sooner or later get back to the complainers, lets all try, please.

No matter how many times you receive it please forward it to all you know.

I have a few issues with this...

"In God We Trust" is not the Australian national motto, it is the motto for the USA. Easy to tell as it is all over their currency.

The whole story is a load of crap. It did not happen in SA, it happened in Alabama, USA:

Also, it makes reference to a 'Pledge', we don't have a pledge, again it is a USian construct.

These inconsistencies got me searching on Google and I found this:

It looks like some person has taken an American patriotic email and tried to fit to Australia.

Australia is a nation of immigrants, ever since Australia was first settled our culture has continually changed, from the first convicts, the Irish settlers, the chinese gold miners and the post war European immigration program. Our culture is not static and we are the richer for it.

Every successive wave of immigrants has been condemned in turn for not assimilating, retaining too much of their former way of life, not learning the language, creating ghettos, forming gangs, upping the crime rate - and paid out for being different with an avalanche of prejudice and name calling - micks, reffos, wogs, dagos, gooks, slant eyes and now towel heads and camel fuckers. Come ten years and their culture is absorbed a little and becomes part of our own and the children become good little Aussies. A few years ago it was the Asians who were going to be the downfall of this nation - now the Chinese, Vietnamese and Thais are no longer the threat - just the Muslims.

The scary part is that there are people that believe this and actively pursue what it esposes.
