Accidental Freaking...

towards the light

Let me set the scene. There you are walking down the street and about 10 steps in front of you is a young lady and she is visibly uncomfortable with your presence behind her. It has probably happened to you, either as the follower or as the leader. It happened to me yesterday while walking back to my car in Fremantle and it made for a little bit of personal fun.

I know my shaved head, dark glasses and goatee (which is quite long at present, I really should trim it, the missus hates it long) may not be all that normal, but I think her reaction would have been the same regardless of how I looked.

At first I could tell the chick was a bit uncomfortable with me being behind her, there would be a sideways glance as she turned her head to look in a shop window, other times she would use shop windows as a mirror to look back. I was in a bit of a rush to get back to the car because I had to be somewhere, so I was a little reluctant to stop and let her get away a bit.

I probably should have stopped but I didn't and I started to enjoy making her feel uncomfortable. I know, I know, I'm a bastard. As we kept walking she started to weave back and forth across the sidewalk, sometimes glancing back when she changed direction, I just kept walking down the middle of the sidewalk.

This continued for another 100 or so metres until she made a sudden move to cross the road without checking for the traffic. Luckily, she stopped before getting hit by a Corolla. But as soon as that Corolla was past she nearly ran across the road. I had a little chuckle to myself and kept walking, I did refrain from looking in her direction again after that, but I knew she was looking at me to make sure I wasn't going to follow her.

Are people so untrusting of the world today that anyone following them makes them worry that they are going to be attacked? Crime rates are actually down from what they were 15-20 years ago yet people seem more scared than ever. Why is this? Can we blame the mainstream media for this?

Please, can we?
